The strangeness of Gazimon's words, as well as the inflections in his voice, began to paint a picture in Al's mind. Clearly, the chimera wasn't telling the whole truth. His initial vagueness had a drone to it, only to change to very specific and rushed after a chatter-filled pause. This meant, in Al's mind, that Ike really couldn't come to the phone, but Gaz was keeping the true reason under wraps. But why? Clearly, Ike was there since Gazimon needed the tamer to access his digivice -- and Ike, while not always a genius -- would never risk using a normal phone when digimon stuff was involved. Then, like triple-bolts of lightning, it all clicked.

("He's still recovering from yesterday,") thought Renee, drawing the exact same conclusion. ("The cover story was probably in case anyone besides us was listening in.")

"Guys?" said Gammamon, glancing between the pair. "Hey, what's hooky?"

...

The drive over to the clubhouse was hectic as the lunchtime rush brought people out to grab takeout. Not even halfway over, Al got a call from Ike via digivice.

"++Hey guys++" said Gazimon. "++Me and the Boss ain't comin' over++"

"Gaz?" said Renamon, the vulpine sitting shotgun in her human guise. "Why? What's wrong?"

"++He's, um, ah, outta commission. Prolly sick or somethin'++" The chimera paused. Al could hear chatter in the background. "++Y-yeah, and, er, there's a cop on the street nearby. Don't wanna risk him gettin' caught playin' hooky!++"

"What's hooky?" asked Gammamon, the ceratop sitting in Renee's lap.

4
The vulpine gave a singular bounce of her tush as Al made contact; crooning inside his head.

"Well okay," said Keilani, pulling out her digivice. "I've still got errands to run, but if you take Gammy with you, I promise to bring snacks for everyone."

"YEAH!!" cheered Gammamon. "Burgers for days!"

"Heheh, we'll see."

5
Chuckling, the vulpine winked at her tamer, who felt a phantom kiss on the cheek.

"Can I help?" asked Gammy, the ceratop having cornered Cinnamon only to lose her the second he looked over his shoulder at the others.

"Aww," said Kei. "That's so sweet of you, Gammy. What do you think, Rena? Can he be your special helper today?"

"Of course, I wouldn't mind at all."

She then glanced back at Al. ("Mhmhmhm, unless you'd rather a one-on-one tutor session,") she thought.

6
"Maybe later," she said. "The thing with node side-tracked me from visiting the observatory, and now the hang-gliding session we got planned's coming up, too. Depending on how research's going with the Ghostmon, there's just not enough time if we've also gotta be ready for action."

"Very true," said Rena. "Also, Mr. Sonson, you've still got school work to catch up on. Eyesmon might do the test for you, but life's not letting you off the hook that easily."

7
In response, Renamon smiled, eyes closed, as her tail arched and landed flat on his face.

"Hm? Dad's old partner?" asked Keilani.

"That's right," said Rena. "He really was a hero to Cypher Bay's digimon."

Keilani sighed. "Guess so. Shame we never got to meet him or Mom's partner."

"Have you tried contacting him since last time?"

"No, there's just been too much going on around here. Plus dad would probably cry if we didn't tell him beforehand."

8
The more Al tried, the more Cinnamon screamed before Renamon scratched at the base of the feline's tail. Instantly, Cin bent her head back and started licking the air, only to break into a spin on the bed and dash under Al's desk.

"Someone's got the zoomies today," said Kei, chuckling. "But yeah, from what I remember, Weiss was pretty selfless. Was afraid he'd try to make a martyr of himself near the end."

9
"Yeah!" said Gammy, the sudden noise jolting Cin into cry out; jumping and latching right onto Al's face like a sci-fi horror beast! "Oops."

Renamon recoiled. ("I'd ask if that hurt,") she thought, the pinpricks of tiny claws like burning embers against Al's skin. ("If I didn't already know.")

10
The calico paused, lowering her head to sniff at the offered appendage, only to pap at Al's fingers with her paw.

"He didn't stay very long," said Keilani. "Actually, he's the reason we survived the whole meteor thing. He's also more dragon than dinosaur, really big wings on his back. Fast in the air, too. Like REALLY fast."

11
("Vague bits and pieces,") thought Renamon. ("Like a nightmare you've spent years trying to forget...")

As the vulpine closed her paw around Al's hand, Keilani exchanged looks with Gammamon. "Well," she said. "There's Canoweissmon..."

"You don't sound impressed," said Rena.

"Oh no, Gammy's ultimate's amazing, it's just... we haven't been able to use him since we got back from the Digital World."

There was a flicker of movement out the corner of Al's eye. The others must have seen it too, as everyone turned to see Cinnamon sauntering from the shadows, her tail up high.

"Cinnamon!" cheered Gammy, the ceratops hopping off Keilani's lap.

The cat kept walking towards the bed.

12
"Because if we get into another crisis, and I have to explain why Gammy's acting weird or not following the plan, it's gonna be a serious problem."

"I can believe it," said Renamon, wrapping an arm around Al's waist. Glancing at Gammamon, she then asked: "Do your brothers 'talk' to you at all? Or each other?"

The ceratops put a claw to his lips. "Hmmmm--I dunno," he said, shrugging. "Maybe?"

"They remember what the others do when they're in control," said Keilani. "That's why Kaus and Betel don't get along, since they hate each other's guts."

"What about Wez?" asked Rena.

"Nah, Wez's chill. Everybody likes Wez."

"Heheh, big kaboom!"

13
Keilani didn't wait for him to finish asking. "--No," she said, her expression neutral. "Not in a million years."

"I think I get it," said Renamon, sitting up. "You see Gammy more as a little brother."

"That's what she said!" chirped the ceratops.

At this, Kei relaxed her shoulders, smiling as she placed a hand on her partner's head. "Even if Kaus is a different form and personality, he's still a part of Gammy. If I had a romantic relationship with him, I'd basically be going out with all of them. It's just not what I'm looking for in a long term relationship."

14
"I need to make something absolutely clear," she said, a mild twitch in her brow despite her half-lidden eyes. "I may have already mentioned it once before, but in case I didn't, Gammamon has a condition."

"Condition?" asked Renamon aloud.

"Yep," said Gammy. "Can't you tell?"

"Gammy's got what most would consider the digimon equivalent of DID, or 'Dissociative Personality Disorder'. Remember how he--" she cleared her throat. "Flirted with me, yesterday?"

"You mean back at the node?" asked Rena.

Keilani sighed. "That wasn't him. Sort of. See, each of Gammy's digivolutions is a separate personality from his own. So much so, in fact, that he treats them like individual brothers. BetelGammamon's the excitable hothead, Wezen's the one-word-sentence giant, and Kaus..." Keilani's winced as her lips curled into a lopsided grin too intense to be natural.

15
October 8th, Tuesday. Between the events of yesterday's crisis and the subsequent R&R, neither Alemana nor Renamon were able to leave bed until until midafternoon. Indeed, by that time, Ike and Gazimon had left, though the Samoan did so with a gait that drew deadpan stares from his partner. But it wasn't Ike's absence that woke Alemana, nor even the sound of Cashew's barking. No, it was the sound of his bedroom door slamming shut behind a stone-faced Keilani.

"Wake up," she said, pulling Al's desk chair to sit on. "We've gotta talk."

As Al squinted from where he lay, he saw Keilani wasn't alone, the scientist having plopped Gammamon on her lap.

("What did you do now?") thought Renamon, her inner voice sounding like a stifled yawn.
