There were good days, and there were bad days. For Nathaniel however? Today had been a particularly good day: The sun was out, the temperature was great for being out all day long, and he had made a lot more tips than he normally did while performing out in the park. Sure, he was only able to scrap together about sixty bucks so far when he had spent most of the morning playing music and showing off his not-so-humble talents regarding sleight of hand and street magic.. but the smiles on the faces of everyone who stopped to watch him work made his relative lack of profit all worth it. Living as he did wasn't easy, but Nate was doing what he loved and didn't regret it. If he could help lighten the moods of the people who were generous enough to take the time out of their day to watch his song and dance he felt that he had done a good job, even if his guitar case was light on change. Taking a break from his good-natured hustle and getting a drink from a vending machine, the teenager would take a seat on a bench and sigh in content as he idly pat the mentioned case as he closed his eyes to enjoy the late morning sun.
"I'm glad I decided to take a walk this morning, I didn't expect you to be at the park today."
Nathaniel's eyes opened as he looked to his right, and a frown began tugging at the corners of his mouth. Standing a few feet from the bench was a man in his early forties dressed in a polo shirt and khaki shorts.. and looking very similar in a familial manner. Sitting up a bit straighter now, Nate would move a bit further down the bench and bring his guitar case up to rest on his lap. "I guess if you wanna sit down, I won't stop you dad." he said, his expression quite nonplussed, if somewhat unfriendly. The man's expression became slightly tenser at his son's reaction, but he would sit down beside him after only a moment of hesitation. For a good while neither said anything, simply sitting side by side and looking at the various people who passed by, though eventually the older of the pair would break the silence. "You look like you've been doing well, that's good. Your mother has been doing good too, in fact the other day we went to that deli shop that you always liked and-"
"Were you needing something, pop? You don't ever come around unless you have something you need something from me, or when you want to try to guilt me into coming back home." came Nate's curt response, cutting his father off mid story. This seemed to cut surprisingly deep, as his dad stopped and avoided eye contact for a good minute. Collecting his thoughts, the elder Thompson would sigh. "That's not fair, Nate."
"Maybe it isn't, but you weren't exactly fair to me or my friends the last time you showed up. You said that I was wasting my life and that they were foolishly offering charity to a dead beat that couldn't ever pay them back."
"I made a mistake when I said that son... I didn't mean it. I just worry about you all the time Nathaniel, never knowing if something bad happens, if you'll end up getting hurt out here or worse. I just want you to be safe." his father replied as he looked down at his son's guitar case. He was about to say more, but his mouth then closed as he stood up, seeing that his son wasn't hearing it. "I'll uh.. I'll let you mom know that you're doing alright, yeah?" he asked as he then reached into his back pocket. Taking out his wallet, he would then pull out a small bundle of bills and place it down atop the case. "I heard you play a couple songs earlier, I think you did a damn good job."
And with that, he then turned away and began to walk back the way he came.
Looking at the money on his guitar case, and now feeling a strong sense of guilt for being so cross with his father the boy would then call out to him. "Hey dad?" Nathaniel asked, his tone much less confrontational than it had been before. the older Thompson would stop and turn back to look at his son, brow raised in confusion as Nate then took a breath: "If you and mom are gonna be out tonight, I was thinking of going down town to try my luck there. If you have any requests I might be willing to take them. If you find yourselves down that way I mean."
Smiling, the older man would nod and open his mouth to speak, almost stumbling over his words. "Uh, yeah, yeah I think we might be going out for dinner. You think you might wanna join? If you're not too busy of course." Now it was Nathaniel's turn to smile, and with barely a few seconds to ponder it he would then say:
"Are you okay if we go to that Deli place?"
